The Unexplainable
Ps 65:4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest,
One was a thief. Another was a traitor. Two
wanted to kill everyone in town. One wanted to overthrow the government. Another
understood logistics. They had been chosen for a mission impossible in the
middle east. We know them today as the Apostles.
Christ had chosen them to spread the Gospel. I
doubt you or I would have selected any of them. None were educated. They came
from an area much like Appalachia. They talked like hill billys. Yet Christ
selected them. I can’t explain why, can you?
Our double happy verse for today reminds me of a
story in song about a group of people at a picnic. They were all having a great
time and had planned to linger over the table and enjoy the outing. Suddenly a
hornet’s nest fell from the tree above and crashed onto their table. They all
ran in different directions. The moral of the story was God won’t make you go
against your will, He just makes you willing to go.
While there may be some truth to that example the
scriptures are clear that it is God who does the choosing and not us.
Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,…
The doctrine of “Election” has been debated, twisted,
ignored, and changed with the times, for hundreds of years. Calvin said “God
chooses who He will” . Arminius said “Man chooses God” Commentators have tried
to combine the two by saying God does part and man does part. Unfortunately
most of the arguments start with the conclusion and then try to find supporting
verses, instead of reading what the Bible says and then coming to the Biblical
conclusion.
Some use the Bible as a drunk using a lamppost. Not
so much for illumination as support. It is not my goal to settle the debate
over election. It is my goal to accept scripture for what it says about that
which is unexplainable.
2Co 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Heb 11:1 ¶ Now faith is the substance of things hoped
for,
the evidence of things not seen.
Our verse simply says a man that has been chosen by God
is blessed (double happy). Then the psalmist continues with reasons why there
is blessedness.
Ps 65:4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest
to approach unto thee, …
One of the blessings is the ability to approach God. The
Bible tells us to pray in many places. Pray without ceasing, ask and it shall
be given, etc. Prayer is an unexplainable (passed our understanding) blessing.
Php 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing
by
prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto
God. 7 And the
peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Our verse contains even more reasons for our being
blessed.
Ps 65:4 Blessed is the man whom thou chooest, and causest
to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: …
Another great blessing is that we may dwell in His
courts. He has chosen us and we have become sons. Servants may come and go, but
as His children it is our dwelling place.
Ga 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth t
he
Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art
no more a servant, but a son;
and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
A third blessing in our verse for today is that of
satisfaction.
Ps 65:4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and
causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be
satisfied with the goodness of thy house,
Not only has God chosen us, permits us to pray
to Him, and dwell in His courts, but we will be satisfied because God is good
to us. Even when we have obstacles in our path it is to teach us to trust Him
more. The result of learning to deal with obstacles is greater trust and thus
deeper satisfaction. No wonder the verse says “Blessed is the man whom thou
choosest.”
Our meditation for today is to thank God for
His blessings and reflect on the many ways we are daily blessed.
Ps 107:9 For he satisfieth the longing soul,
and filleth the
hungry soul with goodness.
